Playful Child

Child & Adolescent Therapy

At Social Butterflies Psychotherapy, we provide developmentally appropriate therapy for children and teens using a combination of play therapy, talk therapy, and adolescent-centered approaches. Our goal is to meet each client where they are and create a safe, supportive space for growth, healing, and self-expression.

Play Therapy (Ages 3–12)

Play therapy allows children to express their thoughts and emotions through play, which is their natural language. Using toys, games, art, and imaginative activities, therapists help children process experiences, build coping skills, and improve emotional regulation in a way that feels safe and engaging.

Play therapy can help with:

  • Anxiety and fears

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Emotional outbursts or difficulty regulating emotions

  • Trauma or stressful experiences

  • Social skills and peer relationships

Talk Therapy for Children (Ages 8+)

As children grow, many benefit from incorporating more traditional talk-based therapy alongside or instead of play. Therapists use age-appropriate conversations, activities, and skill-building techniques to help children better understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

This approach supports:

  • Identifying and expressing emotions

  • Building coping and problem-solving skills

  • Improving communication

  • Increasing self-awareness and confidence

Adolescent-Centered Therapy (Teens & Young Adults)

Adolescence is a time of significant emotional, social, and identity development. Our adolescent-centered approach focuses on creating a space where teens feel heard, respected, and understood.

Therapy may include open dialogue, skill-building, and exploration of personal goals, relationships, and life stressors.

We support teens with:

  • Anxiety, depression, and mood changes

  • Academic or social stress

  • Identity development and self-esteem

  • Family conflict

  • Life transitions and future planning

Our Approach

We use a person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach to care. Sessions may be play-based, talk-based, or a blend, depending on your child’s age, needs, and comfort level.

We also collaborate with parents and caregivers to:

  • Provide guidance and support

  • Strengthen communication at home

  • Reinforce skills learned in therapy
